Emperor vs Elector: aim and how to join

(Last update: O7.07."12)

The 'Emperor vs Elector' blog (aims and current activities summarized here: read the comments to this post for updates) is devoted to a Web (diplomatic and military) Campaign set in a fictitious Europe approximatively by the time of the SYW. The main conflict is between Gallia and Hesse-Seewald, but many other countries (generally small) are involved, or carry on fighting their private arch-enemy.
The Laws of Physics are relaxed in our Multiverse: time is extended and Malburian as well as AWI countries and armies coexist there.
Space also is elastic, with e.g. already 2 or 3 'France' and still room for at least a 3rd (in the South-East: Saint Maurice?).

If you don't want to mix your own campaign with the main one, you can place your country(ies) far away from Europe. Actually the European Courts are milling with rumours of the recent discovery of an immense 7th Continent in the Pacific Ocean. Thus you'll be able to take part to the exchange of informations, diplomatic missives and even wanton threats of military intervention!

If a solo wargamer you'll be welcome to play, as a neutral proxy, battles between the armies of players that (given distance in the Real World™) cannot meet across a tabletop. What minis (if even you use them) and rules you'll use will be immaterial, as long as you keep a strict 1-to-1 correspondance with the players' Orders of Battle and list of Characters. Thus you'll be able to write a battle report with the names of the players' units and generals.

No need to own a blog or webpage, several participants have neither. The owner of 'EvE' will create you an ID allowing to post on the blog.

Jeff Hudelson, owner of the blog (and also Ruler of Saxe-Bearstein and Stagonia) wrote:

(Flags of Imagi-Nations having more recently joined 'EvE')

Most of the recent flags were drawn by the very talented David 'NBA' Linienblatt.

Yes, I wish that all of those "Emperor vs Elector" members who don't have "photo" on their PROFILE page would use a flag for their nation.

They do look very cool when one posts a comment.

A première : on oct. 21, 2007 a triangular encounter took place between the armies of Frankzonia, Stagonia and the defenders of the town of Offenbach, belonging to the Soweiter League. The original point is that the rulers of Frankzonia and the League live in Arkansas and Southern California respectively (and for various reasons never endvisaged to meet across the tabletop) while the ‘actual' battle is fought in British Columbia (where the Stagonian King lives in our Real World™) by a group of ‘neutral' wargamers, Murdock and his ‘Marauders’ acting as ‘proxies' for the Frankzonian and Soweiterer rulers.

A brief account of the battle is available (with some pictures) on the "Emperor vs Elector" group blog; Murdock posted on his own blog a juicy report of this BATTLE OF OFFENBACH, with eye-candy photos as usual.

Hopefully this example will be largely followed, allowing a totally new level of interplay between the 34 (at the date of this premiere) Lace Wars Imagi-Nation creators contributing to the "Emperor vs Elector" campaign. The 'meeting' blog will thus become far more useful to its contributors!

Nov. 03: Following this successful ‘premiere’, another ‘battle by proxy’ –this time a ‘neutral’ solo wargamer controlling the forces from 7 other players scattered across whole North America– will take place near the town of Tippelbruder.

EvE, BATTLES BY ‘PROXIES’, SOLO WARGAMERS, WEB CAMPAIGNS BETWEEN BLOGS and FICTITIOUS 18th C. COUNTRIES / ARMIES

(°- Xposted on the VSF & SF boards since several regular posters there showed an interest in fictitious Lace Wars campaigns, at least if ‘spiced’ with Sci-Fi elements: perfectly endvisageable here if kept «Oversky»,
°- Xposted on the Pirates board since some postersare interested in conflicts in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbeanat a later date, while as in History conflicts in Mythical Europe are echoed in the New World. And also because the situation there may be quite different from what ‘we know’ (traditionalist Spanish troops still in morion by the mid-18th C., e.g.), and piracy may still be rampant).

Re. A (fictitious) Lace Wars *After Action Bulletin* just posted on his *blog* by a SOLO wargamer.

After the successful ‘premiere’ «battle by proxy» of the ‘Emperor vs Elector' web group the ‘battle of Tippelbruder’ was planned. Owing to the hard realities of ‘The Real World™’ it was fought only on jan. 27.

This time, a SOLO wargamer acting as a neutral ‘proxy’ played (using of course his own minis and favorite rules) the battle following the map movements of no less than 8 different forces. The interesting point is that the ‘proxy’ lives in Arkansas, while the army of a fictitious 18th C. country ‘from British Columbia’ challenged the converged contingents sent by 7 gamers scattered across the whole North America and Great Britain.
Of course PBM, then PbeM wargame campaign exist for decades. BUT the originality here is that the EvE group don’t bother with distances, duration of travels and logistics: map movements are just *excuses* for such ‘battles by proxy’, adding enjoyable exchanges between members of that congenial, convivial and collegial bunch.

Such ‘proxy battles’ are gratifying both for the Solo wargamers who are fully part of a common effort, and for the ‘proxied’ players who are allow to campaign together while they could never, materially, meet across a table-top. Thus the members of ‘EvE’ are currently ‘stirring the pot’ in their web campaign to multiply the opportunites for such games in 2008.
The OOB, flags and uniforms of the
battle of Unter Schweingau are already on display.

Then this group of Imagi-Nation rulers scattered up to tens thousands of miles apart, will enjoy far more than just the possibility to exchange local news and jolly diplomatic missives. Before the instauration of such ‘battles by proxy’ the Mythical Europe was divided in as many *independant* theatres of operations as many ‘local groups’: Gallia vs Hesse-Seewald (Bill Protz vs Jim Purky, to mention names notunknown here), the ‘Mieczyslaw – Norden – Saxe-Beartsein triangle’… and, chiefly, as many warring pairs of Imagi-Nations as there are solo gamers in the group. With the ‘proxied battles’, all can potentially interfere / interact – providing to all a gratifying feeling of ‘sharing’ and ‘belonging’.

BTW, with reference to my previous posts on this board, I have now on my blog this 55 working «Fict» links to blogs or sites devoted to fictitious Lace Wars Imagi-Nation(s), and 7 more such fictitious countries are richely and –regularly illustrated in the messages, Files and Photos folders of the Old School Wargaming and SocDaisy Yahoo groups.
If you know of a currently active Lace Wars fictitious wargaming Country not repertoried on my listing, please carry forward the info!

Gaming an ‘alternate’ World (Lace) War - or is it World-wide Lace Gaming?
(posted on the TMP)

Members of the ‘Emperor vs Elector’ web campaign play some ‘battles by proxy’.

A complementary approach is for gamers fortunate enough to meet across a table, to invite fellow players living far, far away to send a (few) miniature(s) –a ‘character’, a small unit- to take part to the battle.
Thus, while preparing for the next battle of the ‘alternate’ Jacobite uprising in the fictitious ‘EvE’ Europe, Der Alte Fritz genially invited all members of the group who cannot physically attend to send a painted mini as their ‘deputy’, «to become an honorary clan regiment chief or an honorary colonel in one of the Government regiments».

Already an impressive character (from Saxe-Bearstein / British Columbia) and a Jaeger unit (from Tradgarland / ‘real’ Scotland) are on they way to join the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland / Illinois. Others are packing up in various locations of our Real Word to join either the Caledonian or the Britannian forces.

A very genial way to involve fellow gamers living ‘too far away’ in the ongoing campaign, and to strengthen the friendly ties within the gaming group.
Compliments and thanks to Der Alte Fritz for his initiative!

P.S.: a pleasant opportunity to invite all Lace Wars Imagi-Nation rulers, with or without a blog of their own, to join the merry ‘EvE’ bunch!

(Posted in a thread on TMP 18th C. discussion board about ‘Emperor vs Elector’)

'Emperor vs Elector' is basically a COMMON JOURNAL where wargamers post, at their own pace, news from their (own & kept independant) campaigns. Several also report the 'adventures' of characters from their own countries, ± "novelization of RPG" fashion.
The messages are sometimes light-hearted, even tongue-in-cheek.
Ambassadors are sometimes exchanged, but for the enjoyement of the correspondance, not to affect each player's own campaign.

Then, these exchanges are stimulating and may be inspirational: players allude to events and places in other contributors’campaigns, making their own background richer and providing all with a gratifying feeling «to be part of a larger, * more realistic*, whole». Whole ‘intercampaigns correspondance threads’may be launched.
Sometimes events in a campaign suggest new developments in that of another ‘EvE’ member: the Jacobite Uprising now gamed by American players was suggested by events in a British one's own campaign. A raid on the Barbary Coast in a player’s campaign may be taken into account in that of another contributor.

Interaction between campaigns / players may go further by mutual agreement. The 'Frankfurters vs Cheesers' campaign and the 'Hesse-Fedora vs Hesse-Homburg' one are partly interlinked with the 'Gallia vs Hesse-Seewald' conflict.

Sometimes several contributors indulge in 'real' diplomatic and military interactions between their countries, the battles being 'gamed' by third parties acting as proxies: such were the battles of Offenbach, Tippelbruder and Unter-Schweingau.
Or players 'send' characters from their country to make a cameo appearance in the campaign of fellow gamers…

Just come and see by yourself, check & peruse the 'EvE' blog, access is free and anonymous!

Later in the same TMP thread

Essentially Emperor vs Elector is a locale for Lace Wars Imagi-Nations rulers to post news, reports and adventures from their own, independant campaigns -a great source of mutual enjoyement and inspiration. Occasionally several contributors, by mutual agreement, go to 'real' diplomacy and 'interlink' their campaigns.
This means that each campaign proceeds at its own pace, contributors are submitted to neither schedule nor urgency from the 'EvE' community.
Btw having one's own blog is in no way compulsory: Jeff would provide you with a blogger ID allowing to post on 'EvE'.

Some contributors post regularly, some, after an initial 'burst' of posts, seem to drift away. This may reflect a shift in wargaming interest (Dispersion – the fate / bane of many wargamer: Ach! Gross Malheur!), more often the requirements and pressures from "The Real World™": sometimes pleasant, too frequently very harsh. But it's cyclical, contributors reappear as soon as they can.

Time is as elastic as space in the 'EvE' corner of the multiverse, the time span covers potentially from the GNW/WSS to unhistorical campaigns just after the AWI.

The countries that made up the 'EvE' world are imaginary at vey different degrees:
-* a few are 100% historical but for the name: thus Gallia = France, Hesse-Seewald = Prussia (a good way to play 'historical' campaigns without a(du)ltering History?).
-* Some field a purely historical army, but the name and geographical location of the country is changed, e.g. Wittenberg. Their armies can easily moonlight in historical games (and, it is argued, can be more easily sold than original, fictitious ones!).
-* Most are entirely fictional, their creators generally using David's excellent SYW uniforms templates to design -and publish for our pleasure- their original uniforms.
Then, since *nobody* knows all the uniforms and flags of the 300+ statelets of the Holy Empire by Lace Wars times, regiments of 'historical' minis painted in fictitious uniforms can appear in 'historical' games as a contingent from some Kries!

"Jeff, the Inhaber of Emperor vs Elector" just amended our list of Imagi-National blogs, now arranged in order of the most recent post . . . hopefully to aid you in learning the latest news. Of course, since -treating my blog as a library rather than a journal, for easier info. retrieval- I update old posts rather than add new messages, Monte-Cristo is declassed!

Hoping to see you there!

AN INVITATION.

Louys of Monte-Cristo would like to invite those Brother Rulers of Urope who so far refrained from officially entering our circle.

Monte-Cristo is a quiet, remote and unimpressive place to make your debut: you would be welcome to announce here the nomination of an ambassador to Monte-Cristo, or even better your intention to honour our little Country with a personal visit. As our honoured guest you would discover our fair climate, pleasant sightings, quiet and simple atmosphere and the benefits of our "exotized" thalassotherapy.

Monte-Cristo always welcomes graciously any prestigious visitor.
In this special case, to honour our prestigious guests, the students of the Ecole de Medecine des Demoiselles and Ecole des Sciences des Demoiselles rehearse a ballet (in the traditional summer costume of our teenagers) reflecting the ‘Peace and Love’ ethos of our beloved Presipality.

- - - - - - - -

Several ‘EvE’ contributors do not have a blog of their own: there is nothing wrong with that, and the ruler of Gallia, for instance, regales us regularly by posting here. On the other hand, at least four ‘blogless’ contributors afaik never posted on ‘EvE’. Friends, is not your modesty excessive?

You may judge not to have material enough as yet to justify a blog. But, since you bothered you join, for sure you have be toying for some time with your Imagi-Nation? Then, what about posting a short ‘in character’ message (the nomination of an ambassador to Monte-Cristo was just a suggestion of a possible excuse) introducing your ‘brainchild’? Please do not be shy, take the plunge and step out of the closet!

And of course we would also like to read from our blogging friends who remained silent for long: not to worry if this reflects a change of their wargaming interests, but we all no that an interference from ‘The Real World™’ is generally the cause –sometimes pleasant, too often harsh.

ECHOES ON TMP

INCREASING MEMBERSHIP AND INTERACTIONS

Now some 54 blogs (and ≥ 6 ‘blogless’ contributors) on 'EvE'
Membership and activities increasing and diversificating:

Two members are starting a play by e-mail campaign: instead of playing his campaign solo, the ruler of Stollen will control this country while that of Hesse-Endelburg will, by e-mail, play move-by-move the part of the ruler and eventually that of the field commander of Zichenau.
While Bizercca and Cavenderia will one way or another play together despite the distance.

More generally, on nov. 26 there are 80 'Fict' links to active blogs on Monte-Cristo.

Hoping for more soon: take the plunge!

In CAVENDERIA PROMOTES ‘EvE’:

«Note that one doesn't need to have a blog to have a blogger ID (allowing to post comments on other people's blog – or to contribute to a "collective" blog such as 'Emperor vs Elector' emperor-elector.blogspot.com ). When you try to post a comment on a blog not allowing 'anonymous' comments, you have a link to the connexion to blogger, there another link allowing to create your blogger ID.
You can post a "photo" on your blogger profile: in the 'EvE group, most of us place instead the coat-of-arms or flag of their Imagi-Nation, or the portrait of its ruler (their 'avatar' in the role of this ruler): this provides a pleasant 'visual signature' of your comments to blog messages.
Now at least 4 members of 'EvE', while having thus a blogger ID, have not yet posted there: hopefully they will soon come out of the closet!»

DIPLOMACY:

EvE members are scatterd the world over, and play solo -or in a few cases within a small little group, such as the Saxe-Bearstein - Mieszyslaw - Norden one.
This means that the individual campaigns are kept independant, and that alliances are essentially a matter of (friendly and enjoyable) 'fluff'.
Occasionally up to 7-8 players collaborate in a one-shot operation, outside their respective campaigns, just for the pleasure of collaboration; the actuale battle being fought by a 'proxy': the battles of Tippelbruder and Offenbach are memorable exemples.

The Frankzonia and, at least for a part, Hesse-Fedora campaigns are 'nominally' associated to the 'main' war of Major Powers (Gallia = France vs Hesse-Seewald = Prussia), but for practical reasons are treated as diffrent, independant fronts: the interactions are a matter of (mutually enriched) background / storyline.
More loosely, several contributors echo two (± informal) 'grand alliance'. They are generally either the more 'historically minded' ones, fielding historical armies masquerading under a fictitious name; or some owning, beside their Imagi-Nation, historical armies or navies. These two 'poles' are the German Protestant States ('Germania', = Prussia + satellites) with Britannia and the equivalent of Hanover, against the Catholic Powers -Gallia, Austria, but also Tradgarland, the Jacobites… Austria is not represented by a single player, there is no 'Oysteria' in the EvE Europe, but several ones from time to time report the actions of their Austrian army corps *and Austrian fleet*. A matter of shared background / fluff at the collective blog level. Similarly Russia is not ‘owned’ by a player, but several contributors own ‘Russian’ forces and post about their achievements.
Occasionally such alliances between mainly historical armies provide the opportunity for an enjoyable meeting of a few memeber, e.g. the recent spectacular Big Battalions Battle.

And of course, it’s 'every Christian Nation against the Turks and the Pirates from the Barbary Coast'…. But again, a matter of shared storyline rather than "Real World" meetings of players.

Current activities on ‘EvE’

A few updates:
No less than a dozen of new blogs / (pairs of) Imagi-Nation(s) joined in the last few months, most following exchanges on the TMP 18th C. forum.
Hopefully other will follow soon.

'Alternate' Lace Wars Australia is now well represented by Neues Sudland and New Wales.
Activity is intense, the 1000 posts markrecently passed.

The basic purpose of the ‘Emperor vs Elector’ collective blog –«The League of Lace Wars Imagi-Nations» is that of a message board where members post ‘flashnews’ from their campaigns, redirecting to their own blogs. But ‘EvE’ is also the locale of true interactions.

Concerning the 'battles by proxy' they are steadily mutiplicating: typically a neutral third party fights the game for two members that in 'the Real world™' cannot physically meet. The 'Crooked Kobold Affair' game at the 2008 SYW Association Convention was such a 'game by proxy'.
But also a distant gamer can play a battle as a proxy for a fellow solo player unsure of his ‘neutrality’.
Or e.g. play a naval battle for another member lacking ship models and experience…

Another friendly, genial interaction between 'EvE' members is the exchange of 'characters' minis.
Either as 'loaned' unit commanders or Honour Guards: a British gamer sent an officer from his army to an American group playing a ‘Jacobite uprising’ which was a ‘spin off’ of his own campaign; then other followed.
An Imagi-Nation recruited an Honour Guard from several countries –some far away both in the imaginary and real worlds- and loans ‘promising’ young officers (or blacksheeps from influencial families?).

Or minis are given as diplomats: the initiative came from Cavenderia when that country joined ‘EvE’ and the Cavenderian Diplomatric Corps is ‘materially’ represented in a steadily growing number of Imagi-Nations. Such sendings of Ambassadors are reciprocated and occur now between other countries.

In a more traditional manner, characters from one individual campaign ‘visit’ virtually other countries: currently Reich Duke Wilhelm of Saxe-Beerstein is making a Grand Tour of Imagi-Nations. He already visited first the Free Town of Tippelbruder (a symbol, the location the first ‘EvE’ «proxy battle»), the Margraviate of
Raubenstadt and is now expected in Mitteland and Hetzenberg then, hopefully, Monte-Cristo (unfortunately the corresponding posts on ‘EvE’ were not –are not yet?- ‘labelled’).
Also, a player can ‘take charge’ of another gamer’s loaned ‘character’ and 'write' his / her adventures

A lot of activity and fun, then!

Imagi-Nations: 65 contributors to ‘Emperor vs Elector’

AN INVITATION TO JOIN "EMPEROR VS ELECTOR"

Creators of Lace Wars Imagi-Nations have in the Emperor vs Elector collective blog "a genial location for imaginary nations of the Eighteenth Century to carry out diplomatic affairs . . .". The blog currently has 77 contributors (though some of them are rather dormant, under the harsh pressures and requirements of 'The Real World ™') representing some 115 fictional 18th C. countries.

Actually each solo wargamer (or local group) carries on his campaign independantly, yet 'EvE' is more than a board to post -already enoyable, inspirational and stimulating- 'flashnews from our Country' : interactions may, for those wishing so, go further. Many of them enjoy to mention now and then events or characters from another member's creation -the supposed actions of Vile Stagonian agents are specially popular. Occasionally one may take direct inspiration from the actions of the 'ruler' of another 'Eveurope' country: a Tradgarlander (English player) descent on the Shetlands prompted another (American) group to start a new Jacobite rebellion in Scotland. Players may exchange characters, possibly represented in miniature: gentlemen (and at least a not so gentle woman spy) from various Imagi-Nations are taking part to the Jacobite campaign. Another genial type of interaction at 'EvE' level is the battle by proxy: when a battle occurs between forces belonging to two members living thousands mile appart, the battle is 'fought' by a neutral third party.

Time and space are elastic in the 'EvE' avatar of the Multiverse, and the borders with 'alternate history' are fuzzy: Germania and Gross Hesse-Seewald ARE France and Prussia, and may casually be referred to a such. No member 'owns' Austria, Great Britain or Russia but several have forces from these countries and collectively run (part of the possible) actions of Maria-Theresa, King George and Catherine II in 'our' Europe.
Thus there is no real difference between Imagi-Nations and 'historical' Countries involved in 'not so historical' campaigns: 'your' British campaign in India would perfectly be associated with the 'Emperor vs Elector' collective setting. Btw at least a member of our 'League of Lace Wars Imagi-Nations' will soon send an expedition to the Indian subcontinent.

We hope to see you there: if you are tempted, Jeff Hudelson -owner and manager / moderator of 'EvE'- can be contacetd at: bluebear at uniserve dot com (at = @, dot = . delete spaces, of course).

"EvE"-LIKE COLLECTIVE BLOGS FOR OTHER 'ALTERNATE' PERIODS?

Tentatively started a TMP thread on the topic after discovering that Imagi-Nations so far known only in the 18th C. are meeting in the Interwars [1920-1940] Imagi-Nations developed for this period, but the history of which will be extended back to the Lace Wars at the very least -while Tintin's Borduria is at last granted the wargaming treatment it deserves. The recently 'discovered', but already gaining popularity, British Civil War" will certainly promote the period.

I'd like to see the time span of such a collective blog devoted to Interwars imaginary countries and countries extended to the late "40, in order to cover 'alternate' (but not *weird*) WW2.

With respectable literary references such as Ruritania, the Victorian era (extended to july 1914: "La Belle Epoque") is obviously propitious to Imagi-Nations, and would justify a 'collective' blog of its own.

As for the contemporary period, the AK47 system requires the creation of imaginary African countries, and their players would certainly benefit from an 'Eve'-like collective blog. The rules system would certainly work equally well for fictional smithereens of exploded USSR, such as Baltic Prussia and Oobleckistan (both secondary projects of 'EvE' members, btw). "Unity Makes Strength", and the two sets of countries will have use of the same models -Russian AFV...- if not the same minis: thus despite the geographical distance I'd prefer to see a single 'collective' blog for all contemporary Imagi-Nations.

EMPEROR vs ELECTOR LITTLE BROTHER(S)?

Interbellum is a a collective blog devoted to be "Emperor vs Elector's equivalent" for 'Imagi-nations and imaginary wars set in the 1920s, 1930s & 1940s'.

Hopefully, with time, Imagi-Nations first known from a given period will see their historical coverage extended, and most of their creators contributing to more than one (4 or 5 by then: what about one for the 'Confederation of the Rhine' / Congres of Vienna' Europe) of the 'period specific' League of Imagi-Nations collective blogs.

BATTLES BY PROXIES IN THE 'EvE' COMMUNITY

'Battles by proxies' are among the enjoyable interactions between members of the friendly 'Emperor vs Elector' group, the League of Lace Wars Imagi-Nations.
They were instituted at first when two members rule countries with a common border on the campaign map, but live thousands of miles apart in the real world: since they cannot meet across a tabletop, their encounter is played by a neutral third party.
The Crooked Kobold affair, typically, while fought by a local group in Indiana implied contingents and characters representative of several players, some living in Canada and Great Britain! Such also was the battle of Neu Isenberg proxy-fought in Vancouver between armies 'from' very distant locations in the USA.

But such 'battles by proxies' can also be precious in other circumstances:
-when a solo gamer is unsure of his fairness / unprejudiced approach in a a decisive battle,
-when a player lacks models (gunboats, e.g.) needed for a single encounter of exceptional nature,
-when health problems prevent a gamer to play for some time, so putting the whole, multi-player campaign to the halt.

Thus in this june 2010 four 'battles by proxies' are fought in the 'EvE' cadre:
-'Littlejohn' of Lead Gardens fought the Dunkeldorf-Pfühl raid on the basis of the Hetzenberger riverine flotilla: a magnificient after action report in 5 parts:prelude, action 1, action 2, action 3, finale.

Gallia fights in the help of Frankzonia: AAR chapter 1, AAR chapter 2.

As Frankfurter's proxies Murdockand his son fought another Frankzonian battle.

and a third 'Frankzonian proxy' is planned.

These 'battles by proxies' are not only convenient for the 'proxied', but provide the 'proxies' players an enjoyable opportunity to play an unexpected battle, and give all of us a sense of 'belonging' to the same brotherhood.

FOREIGN VISITORS TO MONTE-CRISTO: A BILAN ON 7 YEARS

Monte-Cristo was created as a kind of Monaco to provide EvE members with a 'neutral ground' for secret diplomacy and spying. The spies-counterspies game never took off, but now and then some personality from an 'Emperor vs Elector' Imagi-Nation honors the Presipality with a visit. Sometimes, it's true, by accident (but such visitors seem to enjoy their sojourn); most of the time on their own will, e.g. a 'commercial agent' from Waldreck, the Great Duke of Saxe-Beertsein during his Grand Tour of Eve-Europe and soon after the fair ambassadrix from Cavenderia. Katarin Lahmia, the mysterious Direktorix from Herrschaden, came officially to raise a Legion of Monte-Cristan volunteers. A religious personality even came from the antipodes and departed deeply enlightened. More recently a representative of resistant Catalonia had a fruitful sojourn here (details on the 'Defiant Principality' blog there and later posts; see also there and newer posts under the label Claire Baizanville).
Time being as elastic a space in the 'Emperor vs Elector' universe, while some visitors come from 1713 and some from the aftermath of the SYW, their sojourn in Monte-Cristo always takes place in 1745.
But when there is no foreign visitor nothing ever happens in merry Monte-Cristo.
