The Rumour of the 366 Wives

Indeed one previous POPP (Prince Ovationné par le Peuple comme Président {= Prince Ovationned as President by the People}) had 366 wives (because of leap years). This Good Man was indecisive by nature, so he avoided the daily pain of a delicate choice. Do not pity the deserted Presiprincesses: the Monte-Cristan POPP is always a deeply gentle person, fully aware of the requirements of the Flesh. So the wives were not attended by elderly eunuchs, rather by numerous young, handsome and totally virile pages. Anyway, owing to the relaxed mores of Monte-Cristo, they were not secluded in any kind of harem; actually the Protocol required from each of them to be physically present at the Presipapal Palace only one day every year. So they widely traveled, alone or in small groups, visiting not only the whole Europe but even, for the more adventurous, going as far as the New or Old Indies. To put it bluntly, they enjoyed a freedom, a liberty to come and go at will, undreamed of by any Queen or Favorite in any other European Court.

 

Many 'wives' are of foreign birth: generally they came to Monte-Cristo as students of the Ecoles des Demoiselles, then enthusiastically adopted the peculiar ethos & mores of the Presipality and seized the opportunity of a very adventuring, exciting  life. Thus, many of them do not wear a pitchoun at their neck.

But what about the marital status of Louys, the current POPP? The uttermost respect of privacy in Monte-Cristo forbids any overt inquiry about this very private subject. All said, Charlemagne, treated by the Church as the Model of any Christian King (because of the Saxons he had beheaded by the thousands to convert the survivors) indeed had only one wife, but 300+ concubines. What could you expect, given this respectable precedent, from a voltairian ruler?

An urban legend wispers that the current POPP’s 366 wive compose an extraordinary network of secret messengers, spies, go-between, seductrices-then-blackmailers, and agents of any species and role of the Presipapal diplomacy. But who could believe such an absurd legend ?

Obviously, when traveling abroad the Wives dress is more... conventional
