Technological Breakthroughs of Military Interest in Monte-Cristo

The Bureau des Sciences Appliquees et de l’Ingenierie, a Branch of the Presipapal Academy of Sciences, is proud to reveal some of the recent innovative creations of the Institut Munchausen. Named after the well-known Baron who greatly honored us by working one full year here as its Consulting Director, the Institut, now under the enlightened and dynamic direction of Pr. Otto Sigurd Nemopholist, Ph D, with Dr. Albert Robida as Maitre-Assistant, is actually the *Internal* Research and Development Section of the BSAI. The ‘Service des Recherches Exterieures’ is indeed an independent Agency directly under Presipapal control: very little is known about it, other than that it could be also bear an other name (an often whispered acronym is generally quoted).
Among these new devices of warfare let us mention the ‘Carabine Culassiere’, the ‘Crache-Mitraille’, the ‘Canon-Obusier Culassier’, the ‘Artillerie Volante’, the ‘Taupe-Behemoth a Vapeur’, the ‘Petardier Subaquatique’, the ‘Esquif Aerien’…..

The technical description of these new (sometimes dubbed 'Lacepunk') weapons and war engines is the object of some twenty Patents, distributed among four great categories:

Engines of Apocalyptic War and Horrendous Destruction being totally alien to the 'Peace & Love' ethos of Monte-Cristo, each of the 21 projects will be sold anonymously by mail auction. Neither the names nor the total number of the bidders will be published. The entry fee is fixed to 1,000 Louis d’Or (or the equivalent in Swiss currency) for each of the 21 auctions. Outbidded (even id indirectly, when two patents are auctioned separatly but have to be attributed together) competitors will know by how much, so they can improve their proposals. All auctions to be closed by the day of Saint Michel, the Warrior Archangel, at noon.

The winners –once their payment accepted by the Presipapal Bank for Sustainable Development and Constantly Increasing Profit– will receive (in a plainly brown-wrapped, unmarked, parcel) all relevant technical drawings and descriptions, building instructions and directions for use, together with the certified acts of intellectual property. Their identity, and the amount paid, will be kept secret.

Patent 01: La Carabine Culassiere















Rifled barrels greatly increase both range and accuracy, but so far the necessity to ram the bullet down them drastically reduces the rate of fire. Thus rifles are currently restricted to skirmishers. With the finalization of a simple breech-loading mechanism, Monte-Cristan engineers obtained a rifled carbine that can be shot as fast as any musket, but with range and precision more than doubled. Such a shoulder weapon can be used en masse by close order infantry shooting volleys: your troops will decimate and break the enemy lines long before they could retaliate; no cavalry charge will survive their massed fire.

Note: Our engineers and gunsmiths are developing a greatly improved version using the interrupted screw developed for our heaviest revolutionary quick-firing cannons (below). Given it will combine elements from different current proposals, when functional it will be covered by a separate patent.


Marshal Maurice de Saxe, a very good friend of the Presipality, designed extremely advanced quick-fire breech-loading systems for his revolutionary musket and amusette. While he granted us permission to manufacture these and the accompanying cavalry mousqueton for our own defense, we are sworn to secrecy until he himself publish the detailed plans of the mechanisms.




Patent 02: L’Ejacule-Mitraille Leger

A breech-loaded Amusette, with 6 cartridges in a revolving magazine (*not* a revolting magazine!). The full cycle of this ingenious mechanism is obtained by merely turning the crank. A light, handy, yet devastating weapon.

Note: Our engineers and gunsmiths are developing a *handgun* using a similar removable cylinder (with traditional butt and firelock, it will look like this 'dreamed' futuristic design). Given it will integrate various other innovative designs if will be covered by a separate patent.


Patent 03: L’Ejacule-Mitraille Moyen


















A multibarelled, and thus heavier, version of the previous weapon. No crank, an astute mechanism uses the recoil to rotate both the magazine and the set of barrels. You can choose between an increased rate of fire or a prolonged volley.


Patent 04: L’Ejacule-Mitraille Lourd



























Heavier bullets, longer barrels, faster fire. Such piece is fully equivalent to a 12pdr. gun shooting canister every 3 seconds! Currently under developpment.
This Patent using the innovations protected by Patent 03, their simultaneous acquisition is compulsory.

The next illustration shows an earlier, more cumbersome version with slower fire but larger bore.

The corresponding Patent will be offered for half his latest bid to the 2nd higher bidder as a consolation prize.



This early prototype (right) delivered a tremendous amount of fire (96 musket barrels!) but in a very short salvo, so dispersion was insufficient -besides, each barrel had to be reloaded individually.

The corresponding Patent will be offered for one third of his latest bid to the 3rd higher bidder as a consolation prize.






This other Da Vinci's design was abandoned: the (fixed) dispersion imposed by the 'goose foot' pattern was often excessive and part of the salvo was wasted.










This ingenious foreign improvement of the traditional organ gun suffered from being a mouth-loader.







Patent 05: Le Canon Naval Raccourci Surpuissant (CNRS)















Mouth loaded, since the recoil anyway pushes the piece back into the ship’s hull. At the cost of a slight reduction of range and accuracy, unimportant for a broadside piece, a gun of a given bore shoots cannonballs or grapeshots twice the normal weight. Thus a frigate can replace her 12pdr. with 24pdr., her 16pdr. with 32pdr. while keeping her displacement, velocity and manoeuvrability unchanged. A Ship of the Line can receive 64pdr. or even 72pdr. in her lower battery: such a Warship would dread naught from any existing fleet.

Patent 06: Le Canon-Obusier Nettoyeur (CON)


















A special howitzer devised to shoot canister at a high rate of fire, either from the barrel’s mouth or as a spherical case exploding in the middle of the enemy troops.
A simple, rustic mouth-loader.

A Monte-Cristan Lady, touring Eastern Europe (under the assumed name Nikmoncha Susslapinosouzoff) to admire old Orthodox churches, heard that a Major Country that will not be named is currently devising a similar weapon (but without the capacity to shoot special anti-personal shells, only traditional caseshot). Obviously a clumsy and incomplete copy of our invention: Investigateurs are currently searching for the source of the leak.



Patent 07: Le Canon-Obusier Carabine Culassier















Actually a whole family of pieces from 2pdr. to 48pdr.
Breech loading allows not only a far higher rate of fire, but also the barrel to be rifled, greatly increasing both range and accuracy. Without any exggeration, this innovative pattern of artilley piece will be more than equivalent to at least 2 ordinary guns of the next larger bore. Special optional ammunitions are also developped for this entirely new type of cannon, such as the Obus Ogival: a shell of sorts, filled with sharpened metal bits intermixed with black powder. Set to explode just above the head of the enemy, this new shell wil be more efficient than a cannonball against any non-enfilated target in the open. Another type of shell, the Obus de Penetration Perforante (modele OQ), has a very thick head of the hardest steel, to break through any wall, fortification or ship hull.



Patent 08: Le Canon de 7 Lieues (en Culassier)

















Sir Issac Newton demonstrated that a high trajectory increases the range of a gun, with a maximun at an angle of ca. 45° (air resistance complicates the computation). Anyway, the brittleness of trunnions, and mainly of wooden carriages, has up to now restricted really high trajectories to bombs shot with a very low initial velocity. Besides, a mouth-loader would have to be lowered after each shot for reloading, then to be raised against at the appropriate angle.
Reliable breech-loading mechanisms (cf. Patent 07) do away with the later problem, while new metallurgy makes adamantine steel available for barrels, trunnions and even carriages.
Monte-Cristan engineers are confident that with the new steel alloys currently perfected, a breech-loaded rifled howitzer-gun large enough to reach a maximum range of 7 leagues (just like the step of the fabled ogre’s boots) will soon be operational. The ogival shell, filled with new explosives, will have a penetrating head of durasteel. It will break through the hull of any warship or the stonework of any casemate, to explode *inside* with devastating effect.
Since the target will generally be out of direct view, a system of fire control (e.g. from airboats –cf. Patents 19 & 20– associated with a chain of heliographs (included in Patent 20) for really long range fire, will be required for full effectiveness.
This Patent using the innovations protected by Patent 07, their simultaneous acquisition is compulsory.



Note: the adaptation of such 'percussion fuses' to smaller shells -even rockets heads and hand- and blunderbuss-thrown grenades- is currently underway: this series of animated paintings shows, among other marvels of military engineering, how lethal all explosive missiles will become with such contact detonators.




Patent 09: Armes Liees a la Chimie Offensive Naphtique (AL’CON)















Not only had Monte-Cristan chemists deciphered the recipe of the Greek Fire as recorded by the Arabs in the early Middle-Ages, but advanced protocols of purification of the components provide a mixture with greatly improved properties.



















A portable Ejacule-Feu Gregeois is under field trials, but Greek Fire can also be used in incendiary shells, bombs dropped from airboats (cf. Patents 19 & 20), and of course hand grenades.




In the way of hand grenades, Prof. Mairdocu-Machmizkol developed the Chinese bombe à étrons ('shit bomb') described in the Huolongjing: the Patent for a stunning nausea-gas one will be included in this set. The recipe was copied out by Agrippine de Percheron, a young Monte-Cristan Lady of great natural curiosity when visiting the Chinese Court (some say as Soeur Maria Enculina del Rosario, in the dress of a Holy Sister of the Order of St Jezebel (see comment), other say wearing a false beard and masquerading as Pia Iesus Meyawalpa, a Portuguese Jesuit). Without revealing too much, sulfur-enriched gunpowder is mixed with naphta and dried feces (cat’s best, pig’s good but human can do). While the military value of the bombe à étrons is limited, if the container of the explosive / flammable mixture is of 'soft' material (modelling clay, hard wax...) wrapped in cloth the device is of great potential to disperse mobs and suppress riots; anyway during the course of the study a variant of the Basque chistera was developed to throw hand grenades at longer ranges.



A Note On Rockets
The use of rockets as weapons is well known by Powers with interests in India and China. Equally known are their limitations, specially regarding accuracy. Monte-Cristan engineers nevertheless evaluated them –all required documents having been brought from China by the inquisitive Lady mentioned above. After a series of experiments, they reached the conclusion that rockets may be valuable weapons only if used massively, to saturate a target and pin the enemy under a terrifying shower of fire. They noticed that the demoralizing effect is greatly enhanced by fastening a whistle to the warhead, and determined the best model. Nonetheless it is their founded opinion that several other new weapon systems are generally more efficient. Yet , the extremely low weight of multiple rocket launchers is interesting when bulk is not a worry. Thus, they designed a Fire Support variant of the landing boat (Patent 13) filled with rocket launchers to be fired almost simultaneously: any opposition will be paralyzed. To counter the risk of chain explosion, each launcher works as a crude 1-shot springal, the actual firing being delayed until the missile is at a safe distance. The initial speed increases the accuracy of the system, which paradoxically could have been a drawback here; computations and reduced scale experiments demonstrated that dispersion remains quite sufficient for a saturation system.
The same system of delayed rockets shot by some kind of springal / crossbow would be specially adapted to the armement of aircrafts, being far lighter than guns. But we are trying to adapt it also to cavalry. A 1-shot springal strapped under the belly of the horse would shot a delayed rocket a little before the impact of a charge. Also not to frighten the charging horses, the 'howling banshee' whistle attached to it would be unstoppered by the firing of the rocket. The explosive head would be loaded with fireworks spreading laterally. Two difficulties: a secure yet easy trigger, and how to assess the optimal timing, so that the target is still in full disorder when the charge hits, but the charging horses are not deterred.



Seemingly a foreign country is considering batteries of simple rocket launchers for land warfare: our experts are sceptical, except as a substitute for traditional artillery in *very* difficult terrain, where neither guns larger than an Amusette nor mortars heavier than the very light Coheorn could follow the infantry -specially in hills and mountains, rockets allowing indirect, even counterslope, fire.

Patent 10: L’Artillerie Volante













An armed coach to support Cavalry in any action: allows the artillery to fire while moving at cavalry speed. The prototype can be demonstrated on the Gardes de l’Etrier parade ground on appointment.

Actually this innovative concept associates two independent components, which by their combining create a large family of variants:
.
-the coach itself; total standardization of all parts makes field maintenance far easier;
.
-the weapon system set on the swivel mount; complementary ammo crates, tools sets, &c… are provided with the weapon and are of standardized size and mode of fastening to the coach. The crew can change the armament in very little time, to meet the requirements of the moment.
9 different weapon systems are currently planned to be adapted as ‘Flying Artillery’:
°a pair of twin-linked very light guns (as depicted –the current mounting of the prototype); the barrels have been shortened to allow easy and quick reloading;
°a light mortar;
°a light howitzer,
°a light version of the Canon Naval Raccourci Surpuissant (if Patent 05 is owned), again a short barrel piece for easy mouth loading;
°a light version of the Canon-Obusier Nettoyeur (if Patent 06 is owned), same remark;
°a light Canon-Obusier Carabine Culassier (if Patent 07 is owned): breech loading allows to mount a longer barrel;
°a quadruple mounting of the Ejacule-Mitraille Leger (if Patent 02 is owned);
°a double mounting of the Ejacule-Mitraille Moyen (if Patent 03 is owned);
°a single Ejacule-Mitraille Lourd (if Patent 04 is owned):
note that a specially devised mounting will allow to fire these 3 types of Ejacule-Mitraille at a very steep angle, making them perfectly suited to counter the increasing threat of Airboats (Patents 19 and 20).

Our Artillerie Volante arrives just at the right moment, when some military scholars toy with the idea of forming infantry in ‘squares’ to break cavalry charges: such a dense formation will be specially vulnerable to Flying Artillery –particularly in its 5 last variants– galloping in direct support of the horsemen.

Patent 11: Le Fardier a Vapeur
For some time now steam engines drive pumps removing water from mines. Here such an engine is used to power a heavy hauler. This tractor will be more efficient and reliable than any team of horses or oxen to tow heavy guns or pontoons on muddy roads and across difficult terrain.
Note that the improved steam engine devised here by Mr. Ouatz is far more efficient than any previous model.
A demonstration prototype is under trials.

An armed version, with the steam engine at the rear, is under development, but not yet available for bidding. Owner of patent 11 will then benefit of a 50% discount.



Important Note
: would Patents 10 and 11 been acquired together, the set will include as a bonus a documentation describing the combination of the Artillerie Volante with the Fardier a Vapeur. in a Voiture de Guerre. Not betraying secrets, it can be said that the boiler will be in the form of an horizontal cylinder instead of apple-shaped, and the steam engine set at the rear of the vehicle. Without horses in front of him, the driver will be seated far lower: all in all the weapon system carried will have a full 360° arc of fire. Additionally the power of the steam engine will allow some plating, giving adequate protection against small arms and caseshot.

Da Vinci's self-propelled Char d'Assaut: Monte-Cristan engineers assure that
steam power makes this design, at last, a real possibility -Leonardo's original elliptic groundplan being more propitious than the fully circular one of some later renditions. But they judged this land leviathan of a war machine unsuitable for the modern battlefield, and ceased to develop it. Yet this terrific mobile blockhouse would be invaluable for armies having to conquer immense wastes of flat plain against innumerable hordes of primitive savages deprived of artillery. Our staff is ready to resume working on this project, would a governement with ambitions over such type of oversea lands contribute, for an amount to be discussed.




Patent 12: La Taupe-Behemoth a Vapeur

Not fully illustrated; an artist’s impression and several technical drawings are on display in the 'Innovations' Room at the 'Physique Appliquee & Technologie' storey of the 'Physique, Astronomie et Enginierie' Building of the Musee des Sciences et des Arts, Grand Parc Recreatif, Monte-Cristo. The attached visionary drawing shows an undersea tunnel that our Chtonian Machine could digg. Steam engines will power a gigantic screw of adamantine steel with a coaxial pneumatic drill. A steam-driven conveyor belt will evacuate the rubble. Ventilation will be provided by steam-powered sets of four fans (two in high position to extract the used, hot athmosphere, two in low position to suck in fresh, cooler air), one set just behind the perforating head, then other at regular intervals. Pumps associated to the ventilation sets will evacuate any infiltrated water.

Patent 13: Le Bateau de Debarquement


















See illustration. A stern drawbridge (not appearing in this sketch of an early stage of the design) will allow cavalry to disembark mounted, ready to charge. Support variants are planned, with either two siege mortars or multiple rocket launchers.


Patent 13 bis: La Barbette Rotante









This cannon mounting was initially developped for escort & support variants of Project 13, hence the irregular numbering.
Instead of being wheeled, the carriage is gliding along a wooden rail. The whole is fixed on an axis and is supported by cannonballs filling a circular groove. The arc of fire is limited only by the superstructures of the boat or ship.
While the project is illustrated here mounting one of our new pattern Canon Naval Raccourci Surpuissant (CNRS), ordinary naval guns can equally be used on it; thus the acquisition of this Patent is independant from that of Patent 05.


Patent 14: Le Bateau a Vapeur















Paddlewheels were used to propel boats in Ancient times, both in Rome and China; our combined staff of mechanists and shipbuilders replaced the animals by Denis Papin’s steam engine. The steam-propelled ship can move in any direction at high speed regardless of the direction and strenght of the wind: a tremendous tactical and strategical advantage. The paddle wheels are powered by the same type of steam engine as the Fardier a Vapeur, but far larger. A working model at 1/10 scale can be seen navigating the Grand Bassin of the Grand Parc Recreatif on Sunday afternoon. Two Monte-Cristan Ladies, both of great ingenuous natural inquisitiveness about any matter related to Ships and Sea (and for one of them even Sea Creatures), saw in some foreign harbors (one in the North, one in the South) a similar ship under construction. Obviously the security of our R&D services is in dire need of drastic improvement!
One way to keep both the paddle-wheel protected and the broadside undiminished is to build a ship with two hulls like the Hellenistic so-called '40' galley. Such a wide ship would not be very seaworthy, but very powerful for coast defense.


Patent 15: L’Helice de Propulsion Navale

While mechanically simple, the paddle-wheels are highly vulnerable in battle, and unfortunately decrease the weight of the broadside. Indeed the later shortcoming can be nullified by the installation of Canons Navals Raccourcis Surpuissants (Patent 05). Nonetheless the Bureau des Sciences Appliquees et de l’Ingenierie is currently adapting the Helice, developped for our man-driven subaquatic boats (see Patents 16 & 17), to the steam engine of surface ships. The problem is complex, so Patent 14 by itself is still far from obsolescence. To own the intellectual property of Patent 14 is a prerequisite to practical use of Patent 15, so the simultaneous acquisition of both is compulsory.


Patent 16: Le Petardier Subaquatique

Will enter any enemy harbor under the cover of the sea, and fasten a heavy petard against the hull of an anchored warship, definitively sinking her.















Patent 17: Le Belier Explosif Subaquatique Evolutif (BESE)


















Able to navigate the high sea, and to attack a warship under sails. The ramming power being insufficient to break through a warship’s hull, the very long and thin ram will end with a removable huge explosive fougasse. Two other ones will be carried inside, allowing prolonged corsair cruises. Folding light blue sail(s) will help the crew during surface navigation out of view of the enemy. An addendum to Patent 16, so the simultaneous acquisition of both is compulsory.


Patent 18: Les Hussards Immerges Vedettes (HIV)

















The best counter to the increasing threat of subaquatic mine-delivering boats is to deploy screens of subaquatic light cavalry. Then –just like when dealing with land light troops– to be protected from their annoyance, your main force (whether surface or subaquatic) would have to be escorted by patrolling troops of their exact counterparts. The attached illustation depicts an artist’s impression of an encounter between two such patrols. Individual diving bells and hermetic helmets connected to the surface by a length of flexible tubing are known since Antiquity, and were improved by Da Vinci, albeit only at the theoretical level. But nowadays steampower allows to compress enough air in metallic bottles to give divers complete and lengthy autonomy.


Addendum: Monte-Cristan shipbuilders and engineers are serious and honest people: they never would offer the patents of such blatlantly non-functional aberrant contraptions, as adverstized (in full colours!) in some Maritime Country that shall not be named:

A glimpse of things to come?

In the near future the irruption of reliable air vehicles will revolution naval (and siege) warfare. Wooden ships are terribly vulnerable to fire: simple firepots dropped from dirigible balloons (or even simply, close to the shore, by men hanging from kites) will easily burn down entire fleets without retaliation. The answer is of course to cover the vessel with sheets of metal, as the Koreans did long ago with their Turtle ship. But masts and highly flammable sails have to be reduced to the minimum, the boat has to be propelled mostly from the inside: Koreans used oared, which strictly limited the size of their 'cataphract' galley. Steam engines powering a submerged helice will allow a large armoured ship to move at high speed, independently from the wind. In the same time 'advanced' gunnery will allow for more destructive broadsides with far fewer pieces. All in all a single Frégate cuirassée will outclass single-handed an entire squadron of the heaviest ships of the line, in the same way as the single warship Le Bon routed 36 galleys in 1684.
